In her own words, Champion and her staff changed the way they taught through “a complete metamorphosis” and “professional development became their mantra.” Thomas Schott, Principal of the Louisa County Middle School of Louisa County Public Schools, Virginia, was also focused on his teachers’ professional development, and wanted to look at “not just what the teachers are doing, but what the students are doing in response to the teacher.” Like Champion and Schott, principals across the U.S. have introduced iObservation™ into their schools. iObservation is a unique, new, web-based program that helps bridge the gap between state standards, district curriculum and classroom instruction. Time is now reduced to just five or ten minutes,” she said. Principal Champion finds that iObservation keeps her sharply focused because, “when you enter a classroom, you have the observation tool right in front of you reminding you of what an appropriate assessment looks like, what explicit instruction should be, how the students should be grouped, and what you should be looking for,” she said. “iObservation is like a flashing beacon on teaching practices,” Champion stated. Schott states that iObservation has dramatically improved the efficiency of his walk-throughs. “For the Assistant Principals it’s probably saving them an hour and a half to two hours per day. For me it’s actually probably saving about the same,” Schott said. Prior to using iObservation, walk-throughs were “so time consuming that they might get in two or three walk-throughs per day. Most of my APs now are doing 5, 6, or 7 walk-throughs per day,” he said. iObservation includes look-fors, exemplary videos, rubrics, and coaching tips to help develop a shared understanding of effective practice. It sends feedback to teachers immediately, and enables teachers to develop explicit goals for their professional development—which ultimately helps students become better learners. Central office personnel can access real-time data in a highly-secure online environment from any web-enabled computer. The guided questions help administrators and teachers engage in reflective thought and dialogue. Because iObservation automates and systemizes the process, it helps schools ensure quality compliance with state and district requirements with shorter, more frequent and more successful walk-throughs.
